Day 1 on the canal - 15 locks

We left Le Grand Bassin in Castelnaudry the morning of September 6th, planning to travel 33 km. For those of us new to this, the day was an intensive training in getting through locks. We traveled through 15 locks, the first of which was a quadruple basin lock; along the way we managed to get through two double basin locks and one triple basin lock - all with no raised voices or mishaps!

Heading into our first lock - this one with 4 basins or chambers! Low clearances under bridges and tree branches keep you alert.

Maureen handling the lines on land side of the first lock.

Mary coiling the line after tying off in the third chamber of our first lock.

One of the lock houses of our first day on the canal. They are similar in design, and all include a white metal sign indicating the distance from the locks upstream and downstream. Some of the lock keepers live on site.

Our boat heading into one of the locks on the first day.

It was a long day, capped off by a beautiful mooring spot along the canal and a delicious dinner at La Rive Belle.

We ended the day with a belated birthday celebration for Captain Dick - a wonderful dinner at La Rive La Belle and a champagne toast back at the boat.

Our first night's mooring on the canal.
