D-Day sites

We spent the day touring D-Day sites with Christophe Rault, a great guide who was able to convey the larger history of the battles as well as relate stories of specific people. We started in Ste-Mere Eglise - the first city to be liberated by the Americans. The area around this village was the center of the US paratrooper action, and those of you who have seen The Longest Day may recall the story of Private John Steele's (played by Red Buttons) parachute getting snagged on the church.

Utah Beach - horses from a near-by thoroughbred farm

On the grounds of the Utah Beach museum.

The WWII Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial overlooking Omaha Beach

Outdoor sculpture at the Caen Memorial Museum (The Caen Memorial: Center for the History for Peace) - the museum is located at the site of an important German headquarters. Caen was significantly hit by WWII bombs, and its residents paid a heavy price in lost lives during the D-Day invasion.
