Carcassonne - September 7,8

Our second day on the canal was a short and easy one - only 6 km and 2 single locks to travel to, and tie up, at the Port of Carcassonne. We walked to La Cite (Old City) in the evening to see the 13th century world of towers, turrets, and cobblestones - Europe's ultimate walled fortress city.

Our second day in Carcassone included a visit to O'Vineyards - a vineyard and winery located with a view of both the Pyrenees and the Black Mountains. Wine tasting and hors d'oevres were enjoyed with a group of 4 Irishmen - who regaled us with stories and jokes. Imagine an Irish brogue when you read this: "Did you hear about the Irishman who fell into the vat of wine? It took him 3 days to drown because he kept getting out to pee." His three friends asked us not to encourage him, but we couldn't help enjoying the stories and the humor.

We returned during a storm that overwhelmed the city's stormwater system - luckily our taxi driver knew his way around and was able to detour through flooded streets to return us safely to our boat. Upon arrival, we discovered that the storm had pulled one of the dock's cleats out and one of our lines was untethered. We were able to improvise a new tie-up, and enjoyed an evening of leftovers on the boat.

The next day our good weather had returned and we started our day at the market, buying fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese and meat for meals along the way.
