Wandering around...

Having so much time during our visit to Paris gives us not only the opportunity to leisurely see all the sites, but also to follow a whim, or change plans to avoid lines and accommodate weather. This day we set out to visit Ste Chapelle and its historic neighborhood but ended up following a totally different itinerary.

Wrap covering Palais de Justice - such advertising helps fund renovations of many historic sites. When we saw the lines at Ste Chapelle, we decided to head elsewhere.

This is a group we've come across several times at busy metro stations - interesting combination of instruments and a good sound.

Tour St-Jacques is the only part remaining of the Eglise St-Jacques la Boucherie, built by the butchers' guild in 1523 as a starting point for pilgrims setting out for the shrine of St. James at Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

As we wandered through Forum des Halles, a four-story underground mall located at the site of the city's old wholesale markets, we came across a powerful exhibit of war cartoons. Couldn't quite imagine such a thing at Pacific Place or Bellevue Square..

We then headed out to the city's high-rise district, La Defense. Above is the view back to the central city, with a view of the Arc de Triomphe over the Metro we took to get here.

The white marble Grande Arche was built in the 1980's and is home to government and business offices. It marks the western end of the axe historique (historic axis), and is about a 20 minute metro ride from the center city.
